Baltimore Museum of Industry Wedding: Rebecca and Clement

During one of the dinner speeches, someone remarked on the joy of learning and living in another language. For Rebecca and Clement--American and French--I've been reflecting on loving in two languages, how some feelings find their home in one language more than another.

When I first fell in love with photography, I was introduced to it via an old time audio slideshow that featured Henri Cartier-Bresson on the tape. He described his method of photography as affirming life, which he declined to translate into English--"Oui! Oui! OUI!" (Yes! Yes! Yes!) HCB described his love for photographing in French, but his love of life was best communicated, itself, with images.

Rebecca and Clement, like their families and friends, meshed both cultures and languages. There were jokes, stories, songs, a great many children around (more than most weddings I attend, nowadays), dancing, and music from both continents. The whole wedding was more laid back than Americans typically celebrate ceremonies here.

I won't point out who they are in the photos, but my family attended the wedding. Rebecca took care of my first daughter when we moved back to the East Coast. I guess she needed a change of pace from earning her doctorate. The joy and sensitivity she showed our family was something that I hoped to show in the photographs of Rebecca and Clement's wedding. Thank you, both. It was a pleasure to be there!
