Fairmont Hotel DC Wedding: Yuan Chang + Anna
Yuan Chang and Anna have a connection that taps into a childlike, joyful place. They act like adults, but they smile like children--and I mean this as compliment, and as an admirer. Unlike most couples, I did not get to meet them until the day of their wedding, but I think it took about 10 minutes for us to get into the groove, or for me to follow their groove (to be exact). I made more portraits than usual, because whenever they were together, they fell into their own world; rather than interrupt, it's best to observe and maybe guide just a little.
Anna explained to me that the three types of flowers at the wedding symbolically linked three of the cultures they represent: Chrysanthemums, cornflowers, and orchids for Japan, Germany, and Singapore, respectively. As well, the ceremony included the four languages spoken among their family and friends (and themselves): English, German, Chinese, and Japanese. Cranes for the escort cards reflected their Asian heritage, and the music was written by American and German composers (and so beautifully played).
All of this planning felt not in the least bit forced. The impression I felt, and I think everyone did, was that it provided a woven tapestry upon which everyone would feel welcome, as well as welcoming of all the parts of themselves. In fact, these outward manifestations, along with Anna and Yuan Chang's openness, allowed me to be more free to go for the images I knew would reveal an accurate representation of them and their celebration.
Perhaps I've become too analytical in my description, and so let me finish with a simple observation: it was beautiful!
Congrats to you both! Thank you for inviting me to witness your wedding.
